Frequently Asked Questions — Tango in Singapore
Common questions about learning Argentine Tango in Singapore — classes, milongas, beginner guidance, and what to expect.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a partner to start learning tango?
No. Most tango classes in Singapore welcome individuals without a fixed partner. You will rotate partners during class, which is actually the best way to learn — it develops your ability to lead or follow with anyone.
What should I wear to a tango class?
Comfortable clothing that allows free movement. For footwear, smooth-soled shoes are preferred (leather or suede soles) as they allow you to pivot easily. Avoid rubber-soled shoes as they grip the floor too much. Purpose-built tango shoes are available once you progress.
How long does it take to learn tango?
You can learn the basic embrace, walk, and a few core movements in a few classes and begin enjoying social dancing (milongas) within weeks. Tango is a lifelong practice — there is always more depth to discover.
What is a milonga?
A milonga is a social tango event where dancers dance together in a rotating format (tandas — sets of 3–4 songs, separated by cortinas). Milongas follow a traditional etiquette (códigos) that governs how partners invite each other to dance and how the dance floor is shared.
Is Argentine Tango very different from ballroom tango?
Yes. Argentine Tango is an improvisational, connection-based social dance with a characteristic close embrace. Ballroom tango is a competition format with fixed choreography, a more upright posture, and different music. Argentine Tango is the original form.
